New to Yoga? What to expect

Stepping into your first yoga class as a beginner can feel like standing at the edge of something unfamiliar. You might be curious, hopeful, perhaps a little unsure.

That’s completely natural.

For many, there’s a quiet question beneath it all: Will I be able to do this?

The answer is simple—yes. Yoga does not ask you to arrive as anything other than you are.

Arriving as You Are

You don’t need to be flexible. You don’t need to be strong. You don’t need to know the names of poses or how a class unfolds.

You simply need to come.

It’s common to feel a mix of anticipation and self-awareness before your first class. You might wonder if others will notice you, if you’ll keep up, or if you’ll “get it right.” In truth, yoga is not about performance. It’s a practice of attention—of gently returning to your breath, your body, your experience.

There is no right or wrong way to begin.

What to Expect

A typical class will guide you through a series of movements linked with the breath. At times it may feel slow and spacious; at others, gently energising. Your teacher will offer guidance, but you are always invited to move at your own pace, to rest when you need, and to adapt anything that doesn’t feel right.

You may notice moments of stillness woven throughout the practice. These are not pauses to “do nothing,” but opportunities to feel—your breath, your body, the quiet settling of your mind.

At the end of the class, there is usually a period of rest. This is often where the practice truly lands, allowing everything to soften and integrate.

What to Wear

Comfort is key.

Choose clothing that allows you to move freely without distraction—something soft, breathable, and not too restrictive. You might prefer leggings, shorts, or loose-fitting trousers, paired with a simple top.

Yoga is typically practised barefoot, helping you feel grounded and connected.

You don’t need any special equipment for your first class. If you have a mat, you’re welcome to bring it, but we provide what you need.

How to Feel

There is nothing you need to force yourself to feel.

Some people arrive feeling calm, others feel restless or uncertain. Some leave feeling deeply relaxed; others feel quietly energised. All of it is part of the experience.

If your mind wanders, that’s okay. If something feels challenging, that’s okay too. Yoga meets you where you are, and over time, you may begin to notice subtle shifts—more ease in your body, more space in your breath, more steadiness in yourself.

A Gentle Invitation

Your first class is not a test. It’s an introduction.

An opportunity to explore movement, breath, and stillness in a supportive space. To listen inwardly, perhaps in a way you haven’t before.

Come with curiosity rather than expectation. Allow yourself to be new.

You are welcome here.
